OBTAINING OFFICIAL COPIES OF MARRIAGE LICENSE

HOW TO OBTAIN AN OFFICIAL COPY OF YOUR MARRIAGE LICENSE BY MAIL AFTER YOUR WEDDING DAY

IT IS IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER, that the State of California County Clerk's Office
DOES NOT automatically send you a copy of your official marriage license after your wedding!

You must formally request and pay for a certified copy of your marriage license from the County Clerk where your license was purchased. Please Note: Each County Clerk's office has slightly different requirements for obtaining a copy of your official marriage license.

To request a certified copy of your Marriage License by mail from the San Diego County Clerk's office you can do one of the following:

  1. Fill out the "Request for a Certified Copy of Marriage Certificate" form that was included in the large manilla envelope with your marriage license. Just fill out the information, include a check for $14 for each copy requested, and follow the mailing instructions.
  2. Purchase a certified copy of your license by appearing in person and filling out a Marriage Certificate application at any one of the five County Clerk's offices. You will need to have the following information available when you arrive:
    • The full name of the Groom.
    • The full MAIDEN name of the Bride.
    • The date of the marriage.
  3. Request a certified copy of a Marriage Certificate by mail. You will need to provide the Clerk with the following information either by downloading and filling out this request application, or on a piece of paper, print the following:
    • The full name of the Groom.
    • The full MAIDEN name of the Bride.
    • The date of the marriage.
    • The address where copy is to be mailed.

PLEASE NOTE: If you are requesting a certified copy of a confidential marriage license, the request must contain a notarized signature of the bride or groom. If they are requested in person, a valid picture ID must be presented to the County Clerk.

The cost for a certified copy of a marriage certificate is $14.00 for each copy. Please DO NOT send cash. The fee for searching is non-refundable, if the record is not found.

Send your request and information, along with a check or money order payable to:
